A successful launch of the Surface to Surface Ballistic Missile, Agni-5, was carried out on October 27, 2021 at approximately 1950 hrs from APJ Abdul Kalam Island, Odisha. The missile, which uses a three-stage solid fuelled engine, is capable of striking targets at ranges up to 5,000 kilometres with a very high degree of accuracy.


The successful test of Agni-5 is in line with India’s stated policy to have ‘credible minimum deterrence’ that underpins the commitment to ‘No First Use’.

The Agni-5 is the most advanced version of the Agni series of strategic missiles developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) of India. The Agni-5 is a three-stage solid fuelled, surface-to-surface ballistic missile. The missile has a range of approximately 5,000 kilometres.

About the Agni-I and Agni-II missiles

The Agni series of missiles are the most advanced missiles in the world. The range of the Agni-I is 2,000 km. The Agni-I missile is 9 metres long, weighing 750 kg and is a multiple-warhead missile. The Agni-II missile has a range of 3,100 km and a 7-tonne missile.


How the Agni-5 is different from its predecessor?

Agni-5 is capable of carrying multiple independently targetable re-entry vehicle (MIRVs) over a single trajectory and it has the capability to undertake ‘hit-to-kill’ intermediate range missile strikes, thereby fulfilling mission requirements of conventional deterrence.


Agni-5 is a very capable missile that has a multi-functional payload fairing (MPCF), integrated navigation and guidance system, as well as state-of-the-art composite rocket motor.


With latest technologies incorporated in it, it is capable of delivering several types of payloads over a range of more than 5,000 km, including various types of nuclear warheads.


Unlike its predecessors, Agni-5 is capable of achieving the required payload delivery velocity by meeting its design requirements.

What are the key highlights of this successful launch?

According to Indian Defence sources, “The missile was flight tested from launch complex-4 of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Abdul Kalam Island, launching at 15:50 hrs from canister variant and the trajectory has been deliberately chosen for the test to avoid any possibility of mishap.



India’s commitment to ‘No First use’ policy

India is committed to developing a credible minimum deterrence capability. It has maintained that it would not use nuclear weapons against non-nuclear armed adversaries unless it has been attacked with nuclear weapons first. In this regard, India adheres to the ‘No First Use’ principle in its nuclear doctrine. The Indian nuclear doctrine includes an explicit affirmation of a nuclear state’s right to self-defence. Under the current circumstances, India is developing credible minimum deterrence capability against emerging and evolving threats to Indian security.
